*Tablets are not included. You will need one iOS or Android tablet or handheld device per team (4-5 teams maximum recommended – see below for more information about teams). The Samsung A7 light 8” Android-based tablet is a great inexpensive option. Kindle Fire is not supported.

Note: Included with your Drone Legends community membership is unlimited professional development for you and your team. We offer two sessions, which we highly recommend everyone take at least once: Technology and Curriculum.

  1. Technology covers the drone, drone hardware, updating the drone, connecting to the apps, best practices, and success tips.
  2. Curriculum demonstrates how to successfully use the program components, classroom setup recommendations, pedagogical tips, and best practices. We also will address your unique use case (just ask your instructor).

Each of these sessions is conducted via Zoom with a live instructor. We hold 4 sessions on average per month: 2 Tech and 2 curriculum. You can access the Professional Development schedule from within the Educator Portal (members only).

We gladly accept purchase orders from US schools, government agencies and youth organizations. Purchase orders must be signed and include the order details along with a shipping and billing address. That is not an option. STEM Fundamentals is available with or without the drone package.

Why? STEM Fundamentals is a turnkey system, removing all “guesswork” out of running a drone program at your school. Specific items are referenced throughout the curriculum, including illustrations, diagrams, etc. Missing any one piece, would feel like a puzzle missing pieces.

Each mission in STEM Fundamentals aligns to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), the Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA), and Common Core Mathematics and ELA standards. We will map your state-specific standards to the curriculum upon request.

STEM Fundamentals is designed for 12-15 students per class/club setting (4 – 5 groups of three students in each). This number is based on two primary experiences:

  1. Pure classroom management. Let’s face it, everyone wants to fly, but not everyone can AT ONCE. Imagine 15-20 drones flying around a classroom! It’s not safe, and it’s not conducive to learning. So we work in teams, with each team having three roles (Pilot, Observer, and Safety). The students rotate through these roles giving everyone a chance to pilot, and also making sure every student has a meaningful role to perform when not flying.
  2. Too many drones in one area and they start to interfere with each other. That’s true for all drones, not just the Tello drones we use in our program (designed for the classroom, by the way). Our experience is that 4-5 drones in one area is best practice.

STEM Fundamentals is extremely flexible, designed to expand or contract to your specific use case needs. Originally designed for after school settings, each of the 10 missions is 90 minutes to 2 hours in length. However, we have implementation guides, included in the Educator Lesson Planner, and covered in your PD. Here are some use cases:

Afterschool Scenario 1: One cohort of 12 students (4 teams of three) as a once-per-week after school program, each session running 90-180 minutes. Total duration 20 hours over 10 weeks. Total of 12 students served over a 10 week period.

Afterschool Scenario 2: 4 cohorts of 12 students (4 teams of three) as a once-per-week after school program, each session running 90-180 minutes. Total duration 20 hours over 10 weeks. Each cohort meets 1 day per week (e.g., Cohort A meets Mondays, B Tuesdays…). Total of 60 students served over a 10 week period.

Afterschool Scenario 3: 2 cohorts of 12 students (4 teams of three) as a twice-per-week after school program, each session running 90-180 minutes. Total duration 20 hours over 5 weeks. Each cohort meets 2 days per week (e.g., Cohort A meets Mondays/Wednesday, B Tuesdays/Thursdays…). Total of 24 students served over a 10 week period.

Camp Scenario (weeklong summer or break camp): One or two cohorts of 12 students (4 teams of three) as a 5 day intensive. Could be a morning session and an afternoon session, with sessions running 4 hours. Total duration 20 hours over one-week period. 12 to 24 children served each week.

In School-Day Scenario: Missions are modular, so can be run in 45 minute blocks. Classrooms of 25+ students? We have engineering design challenges/worksheets half the students can be using while the other half work on the physical drone mission (coming fall 2022 – new online simulator lesson track; students can work in the simulator while others fly/work in physical drones!).

Our current curriculum package, STEM Fundamentals, is designed for children grades 5 – 8, however we’ve helped schools run Fundamentals with children in 4th and even 9th grade. The commercial drone concepts throughout the curriculum are applicable to all ages, whereas the academic standards are more appropriate for the 5 – 8 grade levels.

We’re more than just another drone club.

We’re a community. Come see what teachers and students across the country and around the world already know…there is nothing quite like the Drone Legends experience. So what are you waiting for? Come join us!
